CNSC codirector, Mireia Fernández-Ardèvol, delivered last Thursday, November 21 another seminar titled “Statistics as a tool to understand digital communication practices in old age.” In this seminar, Mireia shared some reflections around an ongoing project that aims at analyzing the role of (official and private) statistics as a tool to understand the intersection of old age and digital communication technologies from a critical perspective. The seminar was organized by the Department of Communication at the Université de Montréal, institution that is hosting Mireia’s research visit in Québec, Canada.
Abstract: Our societies are increasingly digitized, but older populations tend to be disregarded and, therefore, excluded in a significant number of research designs in the field. An intersectional approach allows analyzing the implications of such exclusion in terms of (a) the methods for data collection, (b) the use of data, and (c) the report of the obtained results. As we live in datafied contexts, it is relevant to understand how quantitative research, and the data they produce, shape the way researchers and citizens understand the world.
