Report “The gears of the machine. Power and inequalities in artificial intelligence” – Various Authors

“The gears of the machine. Power and inequalities in artificial intelligence” is a report curated by Oxfam Intermón and published by the Directorate of Global Justice of the Barcelona City Council, with contributions from members of the CNSC. Sara Suárez-Gonzalo is the author of the introduction and also contributed to the table of contents. Andrea Rosales and Judith Membrives participated in the work sessions and discussions of the report.

The result is a collective work in which each chapter is written by someone closely connected to the subject. It includes perspectives from academia as well as civil society organizations. The report explores around ten areas of people’s lives in which artificial intelligence is exacerbating inequalities, ranging from eco-social impacts to labour conditions, including the marginalization of cultural diversity, gender discrimination, and institutionalized racism, among others. However, the authors highlight the potential to reverse these harms and to promote frameworks in which artificial intelligence can help reduce inequalities.
