CNSC principal investigator, Manuel Castells, has been appointed minister of the newly created Ministry for Universities by the incumbent Spanish government presided by prime minister Pedro Sánchez. As such, Professor Castells takes on a chief political role in Spain’s executive government by joining its cabinet along with other 21 ministers as well as the prime minister. Professor Castells—a worldwide renowned and leading scholar in the study of globalization, urban sociology, social movements, communication technologies, and the network society—will face the challenge of managing the university sector state-wise. This subdivision involves administering issues such as fees and scholarships, social security contribution schemes, working conditions of academic staff, and a statute for careers in research, among others.
