The Communication Networks & Social Change (CN&SC) Research Group of the IN3/UOC organises the research seminar “Technopolitics and the Brazilian ‘Journeys of June’: a data analysis study on networked mobilization and information diffusion” by Marcela Canavarro, PhD candidate at Universidade do Porto (Portugal) and IN3 Visiting Scholar until next July.
Abstract
During the seminar, Marcela will present her research study. This study focuses on quantitative and qualitative analysis on recent Brazilian popular uprisings in order to research digitally-enabled contagious at networks of political mobilization and its mid-term political implications.
Marcela investigates how information disseminates at networks of selected public pages on Facebook and analyze technopolitical dynamics associated with their physical and online action. The main frame is the so-called Journeys of June that took place in 2013, in Brazil, firstly motivated by the national rise in bus fares. She also looks into its supposed repercussions until 2016. She relies on open social data, questionnaires, and interviews as primary sources. To investigate the data sets extracted from social networking platforms, she applies data & text mining techniques associated with concepts from the Network Science. The primary sources support the theoretical analysis mainly based on Technopolitics concepts, Social Movements theories, and Communication.
