Juan Linares-Lanzman and Andrea Rosales (CNSC) present preliminary results from an ongoing research project on AI resistance and social movements at the international conference “Imagining Resistance: Actions, Methods and Technologies of Protest,” hosted by the University of Bergamo (Italy) on 12–13 March 2026.
The presentation explores how civil society initiatives are challenging the social, environmental, and political consequences of AI-related technological development. To illustrate this phenomenon, the research examines three case studies from Spain: Riders x Derechos, a workers’ platform advocating for labour rights in the platform economy; Tu Nube Seca Mi Río, a collective protesting against the environmental impact of data centres; and Adolescència Lliure de Mòbils, a movement promoting the regulation of smartphones and social media use among children and teenagers.
Drawing on a mixed-methods approach, the study analyses public materials, social media practices, and media coverage to explore the imaginaries, narratives, and practices through which AI resistance takes shape.
The research contributes to understanding resistance not only as opposition to technological development, but also as a technopolitical practice that imagines alternative futures for digital technologies.
