Social media promised safe spaces for connection but has become a hotspot for hate speech, especially among young people. In a new interview with Verificat, researcher Marta Cambronero explains why: some political movements exploit anger to push divisive narratives, while algorithms and profit-driven creators promote extreme content. While these platforms previously empowered youth movements (like Spain’s 15M protests), they now frequently exacerbate societal divides.
The line between free speech and hate speech is blurry; malicious actors mix legitimate criticism with harmful rhetoric. Cambronero believes the solution lies in helping young people recognize and reject hateful messaging without silencing debate. “The answer”, she says, “will come mostly from young people themselves”.
